An element that is in a particular state, such as being the first element of its type or having the mouse pointer over it, will be selected by a pseudo-class selector. When referring to something that is untrue, such as pseudo-science or pseudo-intellectual, the word pseudo is frequently paired with another word that has been hyphenated. Additionally, the prefix pseudo- is seen in nouns like pseudonym.
